Who You Gonna Call When The Lights Go Out?
Point Loma Electric is
Your San Diego Electrician for Older Homes
Homes built before 1970 are not equipped for todays modern appliances. If your breakers
trip when you plug in too many appliances it may be time to consider an electrical service upgrade. If
you have space in your breaker box, we may be able to add additional circuits to your existing service.
However, if you are already utilizing all the available power in your home, it may be time to consider an
eletrical service upgrade. Most homes have only 100 amps of available power. Space heaters, blow
dryers, microwaves, plasma TVs and computers were most likely not available when your home was
built. These days most modern homes require a minimum of 200 amps of electrical service in order to
support todays appliances.
Why Do The Lights Go Out When You Plug In Too Many
Appliances?
In order to protect your wires from overheating and starting a fire, circuit breakers are
designed to trip and cut off the power to everything on that circuit. This is a good thing. When
circuit breakers get old and worn out, they may not trip when there is too much power being drawn on a single
circuit. If you are living in an older home and your lights are NOT going out when there are many
appliances plugged in it is time for an Electrical Safetly Inspection. If too much electricity is
flowing through your house wires you may have a dangerous fire hazard on your hands. More fires are
started from faulty or overloaded wiring than any other cause.
