Meet the owner:  Jim Dent

James Dent San Diego Electrician

San Diego Electrical Contractor, James Dent began his electrical career in the summer of 1971 in his hometown in Northern Virginia. There, he began working for his father as an electrician in order to pay off a car loan.

After graduating in 1972, he again went to his father for a job. By then, however, the car was paid for and dad wanted more experienced help. His father told him to go out on his own and work as an electrician, learn the trade of an electrical contractor, and then come to him for a job as a licensed electrician. So, James began working as a helper with an
electrician friend who was wiring new tract houses. In addition to this valuable on-the-job training, Jim and his friend spent many an evening after work going over wiring drawings of the houses they had worked on that day.

By 1974, James had become a skilled electrician and begun working for his father again.
Dent Electric of Northern Virginia specialized in the wiring of new custom homes and residential electrical service-and-repair. James soon found that he had a real knack for troubleshooting electrical problems and decided to become an electrical contractor.

In 1976, James moved to Phoenix, Arizona and then on to Tucson where he spent the next eight years wiring everything from custom desert homes, to expansive new shopping malls, to convenience stores. "I got most of my commercial experience on a Safeway Shopping Center in Tucson," said James of a 1979 project. "I was on that job for almost two years." In keeping with the family tradition, brother Erik now operates his own Electrical Service Company,
Dent Electric in Phoenix

In 1983 James moved to San Diego, California, where he took a job as an electrician for almost three years with Race Electric of Ramona. At Race, however, he found himself working back in the hot Phoenix desert the very first year! After being continually sent to work out of town, from San Pedro to Santa Cruz, James decided to look for a job as an electrician that would keep him in San Diego.

In 1988, James earned his California State Electrical Contractor's License and Fairfax Electrical Contracting was born. James had become his own boss. He took on small jobs: duplex's, condos and service work. He changed his company's name to Point Loma Electric in 1993. PLE not only specialized in
residential electrical service-and-repair, but became actively involved in the utility pole removal and electrical undergrounding work that was being done all over San Diego County. "We would pick up the SDG&E, SBC, and cable TV electric conduits at the property line, extend them underground to the house, and tie them into the existing overhead system." A Bobcat/backhoe, dump truck, and compactor became valuable additions to the company.

In 2002, James expanded his residential electric service and electrical contracting business to North San Diego County. But after more than 2 years of commuting cross-county on a daily basis, he realized that the majority of his business was in the San Diego Metro area and that the north county was not the place for him to work as an electrician. He ultimately closed the North County office to focus on servicing all customers from a single centralized location.

Throughout his career, James Dent has earned the well-deserved reputation for providing his customers with outstanding electrical service and quality workmanship. In addition, he is respected for his integrity as a businessman. And he prides himself on being on time!
