Why is my Wall Switch / Outlet Hot to the
Touch?
If you have an outlet
or wall switch that feels hot to the touch then you need to have them inspected and repaired right away. The
hot outlet or switch maybe caused by a power overload, loose wire connection or weak contacts inside the
device.
Many of older homes have wall outlets that don't have a snug
enough connection when you plug into them. If your appliance power cord is loose and falls out of the electric
outlet, the electrical receptacle needs to be replaced. Any loose or bad electrical connection to the electrical
device (whether it is from a faulty cord, outlet or switch) can cause unwanted power outages and are a fire hazard.
Call the electrician to troubleshoot and repair the electrical problem. Consider having the electrical contractor
update all the switches and Tamper-Resistant Outlets (TRO) and GFI receptacles throughout the
house.
Note: Dimmer switches produce some heat in their normal
operation and may feel warm to the touch.
Arcing, sparking,
smoking or crackling sounds:
Electrical devices such as switches, outlets, lights and panel
boxes should NOT have arcing (a sudden flash), crackling sounds, humming noises, smoke, odd burnt plastic or
other unusual electrical smell coming from them. If they do, it COULD MEAN YOUR HOME IS IN IMMINENT DANGER
FROM AN ELECTRICAL FIRE! If you have a hot or smoking electrical device, turn it off and unplug the power if
you can safely! And then contact a professional licensed electrician to replace the faulty wiring or
device. If you continue to smell a burning smell or the wall is warm to the touch, call the fire
department.
Loose connections in the electric
system must be repaired immediately as they can cause a fire.
